January is International Creativity Month – so, as a creative agency – here are three techniques we use when looking for that extra boost of inspiration.
1. Plug into some happy music
It’s a well-known fact that music soothes the soul, but have you thought about using it for creativity? Research shows that listening to happy music can facilitate divergent thinking, and therefore increase creativity (Ritter et al., Happy creativity). Try a few different genres to find out which suits you best. While pop tunes might distract some, classical music could be the key to unlocking new ideas. As a bonus, using your headphones will block out other background distractions.
2. Get your team involved in some Super Brain Yoga
It might sound difficult, but you don’t have to be a yoga expert to reap the benefits of this three-minute exercise. The concept is simple: grab your earlobes with opposite hands and slowly squat up and down. Combined with deep breaths, this activity acts like a cup of coffee for your brain and has been scientifically proven to improve brain function. You’ll find you’re more alert and ready to take on any creative task that is thrown your way.
3. Take a walk
Eating lunch at your desk might feel efficient, but it is more likely to set you back in the grand scheme of things. Skipping your lunch break means that your brain doesn’t have a chance to slow down and switch off. Getting some fresh air reduces stress and allows your brain to reset, which boosts creativity when you do return to work. Taking regular breaks also allows you to focus better, fight fatigue and resist distractions. Stepping away from your desk might be just what you need when you feel like you’re stuck in a rut.
